A&E, From Fleece to Terry Cloth...The Right Thread

This technical bulletin provides recommendations (weight, needle, thread, and backing) for common embroidery applications.

Notes:

  • Signature® is the brand name for A&E's high performance polyester embroidery thread.

    • For a Matte Finish appearance use a T-18 or T-24 Perma Core or a T-21 or T-27 Perma Spun.
  • All apparel will make direct skin contact and should be backed with water-soluble backing, if possible, so that the embroidery will become softer with wear and laundering.  These include golf or polo shirts, T-shirts, lingerie, towels, and bedding

  • Conversion from Metric weights of backing:  Some companies display their backing in grams/meter instead of ounces/yard.  To convert from  grams per square meter to ounces per square yard, divide the grams per square meter by 33.9.  For example, 69 grams/meter divided by 33.9 equals 2.03 ounces per square yard (or 2 ounces of backing).
