A&E Example Quilted Scissor Case

Materials for Quilted Scissor Case:

  • Two 11 inch squares of fabric.  One for the outside of the scissor case and one for the lining.

  • One 11 inch square of thin cotton batting.

  • One 22 inch bias cut strip of fabric for the binding.  Cut this 1-1/4 inches wide.

  • Threads for quilting and construction:  Recommend Signature® 100% Machine Quilting Thread by A&E, Inc.  Select a contrasting color to the outer scissor case fabric.

  • Two 7-1/2 inch pieces of two sided satin ribbon for the bow tie.

  • Circle pattern (See below.  This is a simple circle approximately 6 inches wide.)

Directions for Sewing:

  1. Place the lining fabric right side down and the batting square on top.  Next, put the outer fabric on top of the batting with the right side facing up to make a quilt sandwich.  Pin together all the layers.

  2. Quilt 3/4 of the quilt sandwich by machine using a free motion technique and the design that you desire.  Here's your chance to be creative!

  3. Trace the circle pattern over the quilted area.  Machine stitch around the circle on the traced line.  Cut out the circle just outside the sewn line.

  4. To apply the binding, first turn and press one end of the binding strip 1/4 inch to the wrong side and press.  This will be the finished end.  Starting with that end, with the right sides together, pin the binding to the scissor case circle.  To end the binding, overlap the pressed end by one inch.  Trim the excess. Pin in place and stitch with a 1/4 inch seam allowance all the way around the circle.

  5. To finish the binding, fold the raw edge under 1/4 inch and then fold to the lining of the case.  Hand stitch in place.

  6. Fold the circle into thirds, overlapping the sides.  Make it wide at the top opening and narrow, to a point, at the bottom.  The scissor case should resemble an ice cream cone shape.  Hand or machine tack the ribbon ties at the top of each folded side along the binding.  A couple of stitches added to the bottom will secure the scissor points.

  7. Tie the ribbons together and enjoy!
